Job Description

King George County Service Authority is accepting applications for the position of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator.

This is a position involving the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant; does related work as required.  Work is performed under regular supervision. Limited supervision is exercised over operators and trainees.  This position is essential. Personnel occupying this position are required to perform their normal, routine job duties regardless of adverse weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed.  Additionally, personnel may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours during emergency operations.


Classification: Wastewater Operator Trainee up to Wastewater Operator Class I

Requirement:  Advancement through licensure is required.


Job Responsibilities

Learning to operate a wastewater treatment plant; performing routine tests; performing general plant and grounds maintenance tasks.

  • Makes tours of plant and checks engines, generators, pumps, aerators, tanks, filters, clarifiers and other equipment for proper functioning;
  • Skims grease from settling tanks; backwashes filters, cleans barscreens; checks chemical tanks and fills with required chemicals; checks sludge levels;
  • Records readings from meters and instruments; reads and records data on plant operations; enters data;
  • Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions;
  • Collects samples of wastewater effluent; performs minor laboratory tests; enters test data;
  • Performs maintenance and lubrication on equipment;
  • Performs scheduled and emergency operations as needed;
  • Unloads and stores chemicals and supplies;
  • Performs general custodial and grounds maintenance work;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

General knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a wastewater treatment plant; general knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations; general  knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of the necessary safety precautions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately; some skill in the use and care of hand tools; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.


Physical Requirements

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus.   The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.


Additional Information

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

Possession of or ability to acquire an appropriate commercial driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Possession of or ability to acquire an appropriate Wastewater Operator certificate.
